Mrs. Ann Lenihan Second Grade Teacher In 2014 I had the honor of being named Troy Teacher of the Year for the district, as well as Elementary Teacher of the Year
I taught at Costello since it opened its doors in 1973 until 2016.
A Masters in Teaching plus many post grad courses, focused on the most effective ways to teach children, has kept me current in effective teaching practices. From 1996-2011, I was the Troy School district's co-chair for science, grades K-5. During this time Troy adopted an inquiry, kit-based approach to learning science. Students learn by doing, observing, recording, and discussing.
My focus was to encourage students to be lifelong learners and to find the JOY in school and new ideas. Cognitive thinking strategies help students communicate their thinking, at a deeper level. They develop the skills in conversing, listening to other points. They learn how to agree or respectfully disagree based upon evidence. There must be evidence. They are not easily swayed to follow, unless there is proof or evidence. They show their thinking in many ways. Students are understanding concepts at a greater depth than being the fastest to recall a date.
One great joy is hearing from former students. Some are Costello parents. Some are lawyers, doctors, mechanics, soldiers, engineers, college students, and many more. These children/adults are making the world spin. I am SO proud of them.
My family is the core of my life. I have a wonderful husband, Bob, (HDP) Bob is a retired Lt. Colonel, USAR. We raised our sons in Bloomfield Hills, within the Birmingham school district. Our Bob and Jim attended Seaholm High School. Proudly, both sons went to Georgetown University in Washington DC. Both sons played and lettered, 8 contiguous years in Division 1 AA football. Son, Bob, married Ashley Thomas (Georgetown) on Nantucket in 2008. They live in London, UK and are the proud parents of our grandson RJL IV, aka BO (2014). He is a magnificent boy. Dr. Ashley is a post doc fellow. Bob is an International Equities Trader. Jim is with PWC in the New York and DC area. We have 2 beautiful Golden Retrievers, Molly and Hoya Saxby, litter mate sisters. They are a treat!
Life is good. I have always thought that each day needs to be productive. We have a choice everyday in how we react to events. I try to cherish and love every day!
